The Chinook Sexual Assault Centre held its grand opening on Friday in Lethbridge.

While open and delivering support services to victims since early January, Friday’s event was an opportunity to put the sexual assault centre’s role into a greater context.

“The fight to end sexual violence has been going on in Alberta for about 40 years, and over those years we have learned a lot,” said guest speaker Deb Tomlinson, CEO of Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Services, who came from Calgary for the event. “We always knew that the rate of sexual assault was high. We know now for Alberta that translates into about 76,000 incidents of sexual assault in a one-year period. And this (stat) is only for people ages 15 and over. These numbers do not include the younger children – and that we know is one in three girls, and one in six boys.”
